Hedge trimming keeps a screen looking like a wall instead of a row of bushes. We cut hedges and shrubs for homes, schools and community grounds across Melbourne's western suburbs, from a knee-high border up to a two storey boundary screen, and the cuttings go with us.
A hedge holds its shape when the sides are cut slightly tapered, wider at the base than the top, so light reaches the bottom branches. Cut it dead vertical or wider at the top and the bottom thins out and goes woody, and once that happens it takes a couple of seasons to come back.
So we run a line and cut to it. Flat top, square ends, sides tapered. A hedge trimmed to a line looks like it was meant to be there. A hedge trimmed by eye looks like it was trimmed by eye.
Most hedges want two cuts a year, one in late spring once the growth flush is done and one in late summer. Fast growers like photinia, pittosporum and murraya will take three if you want them sharp all year.
We will not cut a hedge hard in the middle of a heatwave. Taking a lot of foliage off a stressed plant in forty degree heat is how you kill it. If it is that hot we will tell you to wait a week, which costs us a job and saves you a hedge.
If a hedge has been left for a few years we usually bring it back over two visits rather than one. Cutting back into bare wood all at once can leave a hedge that never re-shoots. Staging it gives it a season to fill in, and it ends up looking better than a single hard cut would have.
Late spring after the main growth flush, and again in late summer. Fast growing hedges take a third cut if you want them sharp through the whole year.
